I used to always use sand outdoors, started using aluminum oxide because I was too lazy to sift the sand. The sand is more agressive, it cuts faster and leaves a rougher surface but still suitable for primer or paint. You can get different grits of aluminum oxide and there are other materials: garnet, etc. Glass beads leave a much smoother surface.
